CONCEPT

Developed by ITTO, the concept of ‘Craftfulness’ was born out of our goal to provide spiritually enriching experiences rooted in mindfulness and inspired by the region’s sword-craft tradition. Our new program Gyōgi (discipline) weaves together a stay in Osafune with an immersive deep-dive into its blade heritage, connecting together the countless cultural resources dotted around the region into a single unforgettable experience.
To stay in Osafune is to embark on one of three possible stories, beginning on a path of discovery through the Japanese culture of art-sword appreciation, and culminating in you becoming a true sword aficionado.

Wear

Whether a tachi slung from the hip, a katana thrust into one’s obi, or a tantō, hidden up a sleeve, when wearing a sword its weight is something that is felt with every step. Repeated countless times, the movement of drawing one’s sword and adopting a battle-ready stance quietly, imperceptibly forges the body into one capable of wielding a sword with deft ease.

No two blades are exactly alike. While knowing how to appraise a sword is not necessary to appreciate it, improving your eye most definitely helps. Defined standards underpin where and how swords should be examined and are the best tool in your arsenal when confronted by a new blade.

Connect

Owning a sword. Most people do not even imagine this as a possibility, at least at first. Though at once awe-inspiring and unapproachable, for every person there is the one sword that catches their eye and draws them in. To acquire a sword is not just to buy it, but to pledge yourself to it.
